2010 CDFA Creative Arts Conference, Sydney Mon 4- Thur 7 October

Bring...

Bring... a plate?

Have you ever thought what a strange request that is? Is the host short of plates? What about cutlery? Should I bring a glass as well? Can you picture someone arriving arms stacked with empty plates and assorted cutlery and glasses to dinner. Of course we know that ‘Bring a plate’ means bring something delicious that when added to everyone else’s delicious somethings becomes a feast. It’s part of our culture to bring something to share when we gather together. What a person brings can shows just a little of who they are, what foods they like, how busy they are and even what culture they come from. We have one friend who is Argentinean and brings with her the most marvellous of creations that are soon gobbled up by those in the know.

It’s a risky business trusting people to bring the right food and some people feel the need to organise everyone down to the last crumb but I love the sense of mystery and anticipation to a communal dinner, will you end up with all mains and no desert or perhaps even better the other way around. Will there be enough or will everyone starve? I have found it usually works out nicely with more than enough for everyone and great variety. Only once on a weekend away did all of us make chocolate slices but they were all different and delicious and even too much chocolate isn’t enough is it?

We are having a conference called Bring... and you need to bring a plate!

Bring... what you do, your dance, song, story, poem, film, art, performance, gift or empty hands.

Bring... who you are, your ideas, dreams and visions

Bring... who you want to be

Bring the future with you

CDFA conferences are legendary for enabling artists to discover the connection between their skills and their faith. They are a celebration and an exploration of God given creativity. Dancers, actors, musicians, poets and storytellers come together to be inspired, learn new skills, create lasting relationships and to share the journey as artists in a community of faith.

This year we are attempting a conference different from any we have previously held. It has always been our desire to serve others in their attempt to be obedient to the vision God has given them for the arts. In keeping with this we have for the first time placed ourselves in between two great Sydney Christian Arts events, Blackstump and Project Dance.

We hope to create a wonderful atmosphere of unity amongst arts organisations with dancers artists and musicians proclaiming the gospel through skill and creativity, making lasting relationships and impacting the spiritual atmosphere of Sydney for the Kingdom of God.

Our prayer is for a new generation of artists and performers to find their feet and dance, move, act and tell their story with freedom, boldness and brilliance.

Faculty

CDFA is blessed with an abundance of talented and experienced creative arts professionals from which to draw our faculty. In fact the hardest part is choosing who to invite from the vast array of wonderful teachers and each conference we pray that God would lead us to ask the right teachers for the delegates who are coming.

We are currently approaching a wide variety of gifted teachers and I am confident that you will be richly blessed by them and all that they bring to this conference. Our teacher profiles will also soon be available.

Workshops

A daily workshops schedule and workshop synopsis will be posted in due course.

Location

Johnston St Annandale, NSW

Annandale is a thriving community in the inner west of Sydney. It’s wide main thoroughfare, Johnston St, is home to both heritage residences, churches and the obligatory trendy cafes. The imposing spire from the Hunter Baillie Memorial Church (the highest in NSW for over a hundred years) looms high over Johnston St whilst the three other churches of Annandale stand as sentinels on each corner. It is unusual in Sydney to have four churches in one block and as we move freely between them I see our passage in the street as a symbol of how the church and the artist can move together between denominations, genres and styles beautifully with grace and understanding.
